Day 48: Mid Wairoa Hut to Mt Rintoul Hut, 14 km

Apart from a possum on the roof last night I slept wonderfully. Expecting rain today I was greeted with clearing clouds and some blue sky. This didn't last long as I climbed up the ridge into cloud and fog, but no rain. I disturbed a white goat and had 3 tomtits cross my way. On the top ridge dense fog and stunted trees, and cellphone reception. At times I could just make out the Waimea Plains of Nelson, not far away at all. Phoned Shane and Dad, both were out! I met 3 others today, one of them asking if I was Jane. Charles (a.k.a. Cheese (trail name)) had been following me earlier on and it was always said I go fast! He is now doing bits of the trail he missed out on. DB Brad came loping through the bush trying to keep up with his legs.
I arrived at Mt Rintoul Hut after 3pm semi wondering whether to go on as it was so early. But it was very foggy at Purple Peak making the poles difficult to see so it would be worse higher up. Instead I lit the fire, eventually, had numerous cups of tea, and splashed about in a decent sized bird bath. And texted and phoned!
I have now notched up over 1100 kms of tramping, difficult to perceive, it does look a long way on the map. Another week to go though I must still think one day at a time.
