Day 51: Captains Creek Hut to Pelorus Bridge, 21 km

by Jane on Saturday, March 03, 2012 3:59 AM
A slow and lazy start I was not away till 9am, no rush as I was not expecting to meet Shane until near the Pelorus Bridge. The river had risen by up to 1m overnight and was now a muddy colour compared to looking pristine and gorgeous yesterday. Surprisingly I felt a bit sluggish! 3 hours on an easy bush track and onto Maungatapu Road where I spied 2 kingfishers – I felt very lucky.
I have now completed the Richmond Range and Pelorus River tracks in under 6 days and with that achieved the completion of the Te Araroa South Island is near…….4 more days of much easier tramping to go. It was absolutely a joy to see Shane drive up again, and know that we can complete this together now.
It is absolutely wonderful to take my boots and backpack off, to have a shower (even if I had to wash my armpits more than once), dinner out and clean sheets in a real bed.
